Heaven ain't close in a place like this

Figured I better get this done before my copy of Diablo III gets here. Once that happens, I am going to be doing nothing else for a bit.

Well, it's still Mardi Gras and the Big Easy is burning up. This installment of the Dresden game brings you meetings, possessions, shootings, dismemberment, a nasty geography lesson, and beheadings for all.

Jack was sleeping/resting up at Davi's when he heard a knock on the door. He opened the door to find our favorite drunk, Weststone there. Jack invited him in and Weststone asked him what the hell happened. He started his tale with, "I met this chick on Bourbon Street." He then went on to tell the rest of the tale, with a few exclusions. Nothing was mentioned about his killed by magic mentor being let loose from the dagger. After all that, Weststone told Jack that there had been a upsurge in the use of black magic in the area. Nothing much but he wanted Jack to look into it. Best to nip these things in the bud before they got really bad (foreshadowing anyone?...anyone??).

After her conversation with Lucas at the cafe, Michelle headed back to her shop to actually work. As she walked closer, she started to feel happier, even going as far as having some pleasurable fantasies about past times with Blue. Getting closer, she saw the cause of it; Duke Henry was waiting for her in front of the shop, ready to have their chat. She invited him in and got right down to it- not THAT, the talk. Michelle told Henry that since he had painted a great big target on her and the rest of the group, he owed them. For that, Michelle wanted his help with the BCV and Ghul situation. She also suggested that he tighten his control over the local police force. Between eradicating the BCV and the Red Court, the body count was going to spike in the future. All information about the remaining Skavis vamps was also asked for. Henry agreed to all of it, adding that she would bring Arthur to him when she finds him. He also told her that he had informed all that she was not to be touched or messed with. The meeting ended with Henry trying to talk Michelle into some fun and games; she politely declined. One WCV in her bed is enough. She's fairly confident she could handle Blue, not so much with Henry.

Back at the cafe, Sharee realized the perks of a sunny disposition. Her friendly attitude garnered tips like crazy. When she went to toss out the garbage, she ran into Puck. He told her that he had found Thomas in the Nevernever. He had been picked up by members of the Summer Court and they were giving him a crash course in who and what he was. Unfortunately, he seemed to be getting more like Adam but he hadn't made his choice yet. There was still hope for him. Puck reminded Sharee about her promise to him about the cake. She took the tiny fairy to the bakery and let him pick out the cake he wanted. Sharee then asked him for another favor. She needed him to find Vincent and she wasn't sure if he was in the mortal realm or the Nevernever. Puck said he would do so but told her that it would cost extra, a pizza, if he was in the Nevernever. That being agreed upon, they parted. Sharee went back to her house where she studied up on spells to send messages.

It still being Mardi Gras, Michelle closed shop and headed out for some more fun. Wanting to keep an eye on things, she used her KTS more then she normally would. She saw the usual sights: lots of vampires, fey, and otherworldly beings. One sight gave her pause though. She saw a human with another person superimposed in him, two people in one body. She called Tbone to her and asked him to look at that. He seemed surprised and told her that the person had a ghost in him. They saw a few more like that. One thing, the ghosts were of three sorts; either a doctor, security, or in a straight jacket.

Jack, after napping for a bit, woke up when Davi came home with Timmy, who gave him a dirty look. Jack just went back to sleep, only to be woken up by Tbone later, asking who the new guy was upstairs (foreshadowing anyone?...anyone??).

The next day started bright and early for our intrepid Warden. After he woke up and got ready, he headed out to the police station to retrieve his belongings. He was able to get everything but his knife. The officer on desk duty told him that's all there was and he should contact Investigator Bradley about the missing knife. After a quick trip to his house, with Jaboo griping about the knife the whole time, Jack went back to the hotel room. There he found Him (his puppy). After the reunion, Jack cast a spell to locate his knife. He followed it to an underpass in a not so good part of town. The spell pulled Jack towards the underpass, where two bums were standing. At first, he just ignored them until they challenged him. In no uncertain terms, they told Jack to leave and go away. He refused, enraging them. As they moved in to attack, Jack beat them back with a heat spell. He didn't want to kill them, just stop them, which he did. He marked the spot in the concrete wall and left, leaving the Renfields still alive but crispy and unconscious.

That same morning, Sharee woke up and put her studies to good use. She wrote a note to Thomas, saying she was sorry how things went the last time they were together and that if he wanted to talk she was there for him. She sent it off via the message spell and left for the shop. Getting there, she asked Michelle if she could use the back room to work on some potions. Not having a problem with that, Michelle said yes. After a bit, Sharee got a potion of Cat's Grace brewing (it does have a disadvantage though- the person using it is attracted to movement- if our opponents have a laser pointer, we are screwed). In the front of the shop, Michelle noticed a skinny, wizened, old man come into the shop. Just as she recognized him as Eli, she heard a scared voice say, "Help me Michelle." As she glanced around, looking for the source of the voice, she realized it was Tbone's. She turned to the old man again and saw he wasn't there anymore. With a sinking feeling, she went into the back room and told Sharee what happened. Using a summoning spell, Sharee called Tbone to the circle. He looked rough- beat up and scared. Before anything could be said, black shadow tendrils started consuming Tbone in the circle. He reached out to the two women and Sharee grabbed his arm. The black shadow covered him completely and, with a scream, Tbone melted into the ground. Sharee was left there holding his arm, which had been ripped off. Michelle and Sharee just stared at each other in horror. What had just happened was True Necromancy, very bad magic. Michelle went to call Jack, whom she greeted by his title of Warden and asked him to come to the shop.

Thus ends the first part of this game session. Part two is even more exciting as things go to hell even more.

We can be heroes, just for one day...part 2

The next day started bright an early for two of us. Calvin! had to see his agent about undoing the public relations nightmare his drunk dialing had caused. They agreed that he should just play it off as research/audition for an upcoming role. Some of the public might even have believed that.

Chloe's plan for the morning was to perform a ritual on the guns that Tommy had dropped off the night before. Entropy can be used to strengthen precision devices as well as hasten their decay. Since she's an Orphan, there wasn't a rule book to follow. So, she made it up as she went along. It involved dancing and very loud music. She put herself into the same mind set she would have at a club or rave and started the ritual. It seemed to work fine.

Not having to get up early, Brand was none too pleased to be woken up by the loud music. He yelled something down to Chloe but she didn't hear. He tried to get more rest but eventually gave it up as a lost cause. He headed downstairs to the kitchen.

Meanwhile, in the quiet Horizon Realm, Romulus woke up after a restful slumber. He wandered back to the Observatory proper to see what was going on. He and Brand met up in the kitchen. Thanks to Nate there was actually food available. He had decreed that we couldn't live on beer alone.

OCC: During the last Mage game, Ophelia (before becoming the Nephandi bitch from hell we all want to kill) had done one nice thing. She had cast a never ending beer spell on the fridge. Do you realize just how much money we have saved with that?

Romulus, who luckily didn't have to work, cooked up a late breakfast for the two of them. To show his appreciation, Brand tipped Romulus twenty dollars. Apparently he got the money by stealing it from the Fey club the night before. About that time, Calvin! got back from seeing his agent and Chloe had just about wrapped up her strengthening spell. They went inside and chatted a bit with the others. Then Chloe reminded Calvin! about his offer to put lotion on her tattoo. She had started to itch. They went upstairs and one thing led to another. Yes, Calvin! and Chloe had sex! Finally! And they spent hours at it, only stopping for Calvin! to make a quick trip downstairs for whipped cream and a couple of beers. Brand commented that maybe now Chloe would stop hitting on him (Ha! Keep dreaming Brand).

The rest of the day passed uneventfully. As it got later, just before sunset, Rebecca showed up and announced that she would going with us. There was something there she wanted to find. When asked what it was, she refused to tell us (remember that, it will become very important). Calvin! also made a call to Lethal, asking him to meet us at the coordinates provided by Rebecca.

When we all got to the street we needed to be at, we saw Lethal there with Fred and some other vamps. Calvin! told them that we would be going into the sewers to reach the Hive. At that, Fred and the others adamantly refused to go. The sewers were Nosferatu area. Lethal, seeing a chance to get even more street cred, was eager with conditions. He made Calvin! agree to letting him act in one of his future movies. Along with the vampires, Miko was there as well. She was our guide for the first part.

The group moved into the sewers and got moving. A couple of spells helped all of us to see. After a bit, Miko stopped and, out of the shadows, a Nosferatu stepped forth. He asked Miko about payment. She pulled a human baby out the bag she was holding and gave it to him. That did not sit well with Brand, Calvin!, and Romulus. Calvin! asked the ugly vamp what he would want instead of the baby. Michael (the Nosferatu's name) told Calvin! to offer something. Pulling the Fey ring off his finger, Calvin! asked if it would do. Michael happily agreed that it would do. The exchange was made and we continued on our journey.

The journey through the tunnels took quite a bit of time. There wasn't much talking. As we got deeper, the air seemed to get heavier; the atmosphere grew emotionally darker. Eventually we reached a point were Michael wouldn't take us any further. He told us that he would wait there as long as he could. He wished us luck and we set off, going further into the underground. However, we did take some precautions before going too far. Calvin! rendered the group invisible and Chloe cast a Time spell, making everyone faster.

With Romulus in the lead, everyone headed further into the tunnels. As we got closer to the Hive proper, Romulus used Spirit to look around. There were a few banes there, whispering something about food coming. After a bit, Chloe sensed some kind of Time disturbance. It was over an area up ahead. She figured that it was some sort of timed spell or anomaly hiding something unpleasant. It was. It was covering a pit across where they needed to go. Using Matter, Romulus 'hardened' the air over it and we crossed.

Further ahead, Romulus spied someone peeking around a corner. He called Brand, Calvin!, and Chloe up to have a look. They decided the best course of action would be to shoot the werewolf, which they did (Romulus had changed the bullets into silver before we got there). The werewolf was hit but not killed. Yelling in pain, he turned and fled. We all took off after him. Rounding the corner, we saw a group of humans and were creatures. One was holding an unconscious figure. More shots rang out as we fired. They turned to flee. To stop them from getting away, Romulus 'hardened' a wall of air in front of them. A couple of them bounced off the wall.

OCC: Now, here is where we get fucked. Just as a FYI, when we made the Calvin! and Chloe characters, Matt and I took the flaw Spirit inept. They cannot sense, use, counter anything having to do with Spirit.

Romulus and Rebecca felt something happening with Spirit. Shade (the Nephandi mage who uses that Sphere) was trying to send everyone into the Umbra (for those who don't know, the Umbra is the name for the Spirit world). Unfortunately, the two of them weren't able to stop the spell but they were able to shrink it's range. After a few seconds of vertigo, Calvin!, Romulus, Lethal, Brand, and Chloe found themselves in the weird landscape that is the Umbra. The group we had run into was also there. We also had a couple of other problems. There were two smoke-like creatures. One was the shape of a wolf; the other, shaped like a snake. There was also a mangy, bad tempered looking lion there. Not good.

From there on, the battle got hectic. Chloe saw the lion as the most unknown threat and cast Rend Pattern on it. She succeeded in killing it (a bonus of the Spirit Realm: no paradox!). Romulus used his super charged cattle prod on the smoke snake, managing to hurt it. Calvin! called down lightning on both of the smoke animals, which they didn't like. Using his friction spell, Romulus was able to get Casey away from the BSD holding her. Knowing that he was fucked, the werewolf who had been holding Casey frenzied and Chloe was his target. He saw her use Rend Pattern on the lion and really didn't want it happening to him. He managed to hit her, bruising her a bit but Brand came to her rescue, along with Lethal. Calvin! and Romulus were dealing with the smoke creatures. More of the enemy decided to run. Brand wounded the frenzied BSD and Lethal finished him off with a flurry of blows. That left the two Spirit animals. The snake looked wounded; the wolf was fine. Brand started pulling chunks out of the wolf. Lethal attacked it as well, killing it. The snake, rather then fighting, faded away. The fight ended with us putting the silver wounded werewolf out of his misery.

Romulus and Chloe went to Casey. He checked her over using first aid. She seemed to be okay physically. Chloe used mind on her to see how she was doing in that way. Casey's mind was full of rage, pain, fear...all that. Chloe was able to show Casey images of herself, Brand, and the others. She also projected the feelings of safety, calmness, and protection to her. That calmed Casey down.

Thus ended the session. We had Casey and defeated the immediate enemies. However, we were stranded in the Umbra. Not a problem for Brand and Casey, they could just step out of it. However, Romulus, Calvin!, and Chloe couldn't. Add to that, our only mage able to travel in and out of the Umbra is still in the real world...in the Hive. See where I got the "we are fucked" part of this. Cannot wait for what happens next!

But first, this coming Sunday is board game night and then it is Dresden. Just for fun, I am currently taking bets on which supernatural community we will get pissed off at us next. Vote for which you think it is in the comment section.

We can be heroes, just for one day

Well, the game on Sunday was more than worth the wait. I cannot believe how fucked we are and not in just one way but a couple (at least for some of us). I admit we were all nervous about just what was coming down and we should have been. It turned out better and worse then we hoped. Unfortunately, Nate's player (Josh) couldn't be there. With that, let's begin.

One more thing, I know that a few people read this and just want all to know that I welcome comments. Also, bonus points to anyone that recognizes all the songs I use in the titles. Just my way of keeping the right head space for the entries.

After the meeting broke up, everyone headed back into the observatory proper. Romulus came up with an idea for the batteries he had created and went out to get a cattle prod. Luckily, this being LA, he was able to find an open surplus store that had what he needed. Cattle prod in hand, he started back to the observatory. While he was gone, Chloe followed Jack around until they ended up in the kitchen.* She desperately wanted to know just where her mother was and she was determined to get him to tell her. For a bit, Jack tried to deny that he knew but eventually told Chloe that her mother had gone with the Technocrats. To Chloe, this only meant one thing; her mother was dead, killed by the Technocracy. This was just too much for her to handle. All the grief, anger, pain...everything dealing with her mother's death was "locked" away in her mind (via Mind spell) where it wouldn't effect her. She couldn't function if she didn't do that. Jack told her that her mother wasn't dead. Not believing him, Chloe asked if he had ever heard of a mage leaving the Technocracy headquarters once they were in there. He pointed out the two Traditions that had left them. Chloe pointed out that the Technocracy had a kill on sight order for the two and all other non-technocracy mages. Stalemate. Frankly, no matter what he said, or ever says later, she will never believe him. Her mother is dead.

Two more things about the whole Jack/Chloe thing. First, Calvin! spent the entire time hovering around Chloe making sure she would be okay. Which was sweet, really. Second, in the Horizon Realm, Jack had seemed sad, hurt, and resigned to what had happened. In the kitchen, he was short, angry, and impatient with Chloe, which really confused and hurt her. He was/is her teacher for Entropy and they always got along great. When things settle a bit, she will be asking him about it. She had a few ideas of why he was like that but it wasn't the time to bring it up.

By this time, Jack had made it back to the Observatory and had gone back into the Horizon Realm to work on his idea. He wanted to attach his "special" batteries to the cattle prod and make a one time use super weapon. Skip was still there and took great interest in what Romulus was doing. The two of them spent most of the night geeking out on experiments and gadgets. Eventually, Romulus got tired and decided to just crash there, which he did.

After the kitchen fiasco, Calvin! left Chloe and sat down to email his sister. He wanted to write to her one last time, just in case things really turned out bad the next night. Chloe went upstairs to see if Brand wanted to go see Christian. She had managed to get a picture of Romulus when he came back from his shopping trip. Brand was sleeping but that didn't stop her. She turned on the light and asked him if he still planned on being her babysitter. He grumpily got up and got dressed. She did comment that his boxers were pretty cute but got no reply. They headed back downstairs, where Calvin! heard them leaving. He asked if they wanted him to come along and Chloe said yes. The three of them headed out.

On the way to Christian's, Calvin! drove, Brand was stoic, and Chloe peppered him (Brand) with questions. How old was he? Did he have a girlfriend? Or did he have a boyfriend? Did werewolves mate for life?** And so on, until they got to the studio, which was closed. They knocked and the door was eventually opened by a pissy looking vampire. Chloe told him to let Christian know that she had brought the photo. He did and returned, looking even more pissy, to let them in. As they walked down the hall, Chloe told Brand that she would get that stick out of his ass. He bit back a reply and they all headed onto the movie set. After seeing Christian naked on the bed, the men decided to stay on the other side of the room. Chloe wasn't worried; she's the wrong sex for him. As she walked out of hearing range, Brand commented that maybe he should stick something up her ass to get her to shut up. Calvin! laughed at that and agreed. More male bonding observations about females followed.

When she got to the bed, Christian patted the spot next to him and told her to climb on. She did so. Chloe showed him the picture and asked him to start talking. He said to give him the picture first. After a bit of back and forth, she did and he told her to start asking the questions. She gave him the picture of Petite again. Christian said that he remembered seeing her in the 50's. She was a little girl then and her aura was black. She was also with a man, her father. At that time, California was in the process of becoming an Anarchist area and that her father was helping the Diablists in some way. He went on to tell her that every decade seemed to bring something out from underneath. In the 60's, it was the Changelings that had the confrontation. The Mages were involved in the 70's incident. During that time, he and Jack had some sort of disagreement. Jack apparently wounded Christian; the end result of that being both agreed to avoid the other. In the 80's, it was the Werewolves and Bastets. He had actually helped the were creatures with their fight. He went into the sewers with them and helped them defeat the tentacle thing with the Spear of Longinus, which he had in his possession. Chloe asked him if he would help them or, at least, let them borrow this spear thing. He emphatically declined both options. She also found out that our favorite gangster Tommy just so happens to be Jack's son. That was all he could remember right then but he promised to call her if he thought of anything else. Chloe will definitely keep on him about remembering stuff. But, she'll do it in a nice way.

After the meeting with Christian, the three of them headed over to Rapture to let Genaro know that the fight was scheduled for tomorrow. It was about 4am when they got there, so the place was closed. No problem. They stood outside while Calvin! yelled up to Genaro. Genaro responded by dropping a brick on them, which Calvin! caught. They went in and headed upstairs to the living quarters. Genaro greeted then totally naked. He had some very interesting piercings...in some very interesting (and erect) places. Calvin! took his Fey ring off to spare himself the image of the naked, erect, bloody Redcap. Brand just turned around and headed downstairs. Chloe wasn't bothered by it all. In fact, she complimented him on the piercings. She ignored him when he commented that they felt even better inside. Calvin! and Chloe told him tomorrow was the night and both politely declined his invitation to join in the group sex thing.

After all that, they headed back to the Observatory to get some much needed sleep.

Thus ends the first part of the game. I swear there will be more stuff from other people. I promise!

* The first part of this blog is going to be very Chloe-centric. The others do much more in part 2. Unfortunately, I can only go into the motives/mind of my character. That is why I tell the other players and the GM to add more of the other's POV in the comments or email me about them so I can add everything to this.

** There is a perfectly good reason why Chloe does this to Brand and she would tell him, if he asked. She has an insatiable curiosity about people, events, and things. By asking him question after question without giving him a chance to think too much, she will eventually get some truthful answers out of him. She has to break him out of stoic mode. She uses different techniques with the others. Calvin! is just an open book. For Romulus, she just has to look at Skip, that is who he is/is becoming. For Nate, she just has to look at what he is reading to know him and his motivations.
