A bit of an explanation, I enjoy role playing games. Right now, I am playing in two of them: Mage (run by Lana) and a Dresden game (run by Matt). This is about the Dresden game.
The system is surprisingly simple and fun. As characters, everyone gets to participate in city creation. Each character also gets to tell a simple tale about themselves and some of the other characters. Much more creative then the standard D&D introduction. If any readers out there play D&D, you know what I mean...
GM: Okay, you're all sitting in a tavern...
Players: Oh hell. Not THAT again.
Back to the Dresden game.
The city we picked was New Orleans, post Katrina. Frankly, it was a no brainer. With it's reputation for hedonism, voodoo, bars, partying, and corruption it was tailor made for Dresden. There are the usual cast of characters. You have wizards, vampires, ghouls, fey, and humans.
My character is Michelle Duchesne: a true french creole. Her family patriarch arrived in New Orleans in 1798 and promptly had to run to the bayous after breaking a few city laws. It's funny how some people get so upset about murder and larceny. Her family has been there ever since, making a living from the swamps and basically getting involved in blood feuds for fun. Her parents decided that enough was enough and their children would have better. So, at the age of eighteen, Michelle came to New Orleans and opened a stall in the French Quarter Market. She's done pretty good at it. Her shop carries anything having to do with magic and voodoo. Not the new age hippy crap, the REAL stuff. She is also what is known as a minor talent. She can see a persons true self. It cuts through any disguise. Very useful when you are dealing with magical beings.
The only other extraordinary thing about her and her shop is that it is one of only two places in the city that are considered neutral ground. Basically that means any being that is part of the Accords can meet there in perfect safety. Even if blood enemies show up together, nothing can happen. No harming in any way. Her counterpart is Blue (a white court vampire- they feed on emotions- his is lust), who runs a strip club called Temptations. They have known each other for about seven years and have flirted shamelessly that entire time. See where this is leading?
What set it off was no sleep and a very bad couple of days. In the game, the hits have been coming fast and heavy. Take a fey Lord trying to (literally) fuck another character (Lana's character Sharee), a Black Court vampire (Martin) giving a demon possessed coin to another character just for fun, an unknown person sending ghouls after all of us, Davi (another player's character) who can only see things as black or white, and a group of gang members running about...Well, you can see how Michelle ended up where she did.
It started at Temptations, where we went after getting Sharee back from the mp's. It's a long story. While there, Michelle wanted to talk to Martin about him leaving New Orleans or at least leaving the group alone. Now, Michelle is what you could call fiery...or headstrong...or a bitch. She doesn't like to back down and she isn't afraid to speak her mind. It's the Creole in her. While she and Martin were talking, Davi, who was in his van...which is where he keeps a good portion of his weapons, got a bead on him with a laser sight. To make a long story short, Davi ended up losing an eye and being practically disemboweled. So, it's off to the hospital and no sleep. That was the beginning.
